  • Inconvenient Truth

    Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Yesterday was the second Republican Presidential Candidates’ Debate. Nothing new about their views, just disappointed they haven’t really taken heed of Al Gore’s message that America has to seriously rectify their environmental policies. Well, except for Ron Paul. But he’s not even in the top four out of all the those candidates.

Even though early America was developed largely by fundamentalist Christians, I think it is THE most immoral and irresponsible developed nation today. So powerful is capital domination…

Anyway, I highly recommend watching An Inconvenient Truth if you haven’t done so already. You can download it here (700mb).

Involvement in Islamic movements increase social competence and success

    Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

A study was just released about 13-year-old Muslims in Indonesia who are involved with Islamic movements and their relationship with social competence and success. I quote their findings:

“[it was] found that adolescents with higher degrees of spirituality and religious practice were more popular with peers, had greater academic achievement, displayed more prosocial behavior (being helpful to others), had greater self-esteem, and were more able to regulate their behavior.”

Aha, more incentive in belonging to a jemaah.

    Shiite dogma in Nasr’s book

    Monday, May 14th, 2007

It’s true that he’s a major scholar and prolific writer, but I feel he has too much dogma in this particular book that I’m reading – Traditional Islam in the Modern World. His underlying message is Shiism = Perennial Truth = Wiffy Waffy Grand Utopian Illumination (well, he doesn’t exactly use this term). Being a Harvard and MIT trained academic, I was expecting a more balanced account of Islamic tradition – where it is right as well as how it got it wrong, with more emphasis given to the Sunni world since only 10% of Muslims are Shiites. Take for example his chapter on the tradition of Islamic philosophy, the only philosophies he examined were Ikhwan al-Safa, Ibn Sina, Suhrawardi and Mulla Sadra whom are all persian Shiites. What ever happened to al-Ghazzali? Ibn Abbad? al-Baqillani? Ibn Khaldun?

    Patahbalekologism @ Usrah 2007

    Saturday, May 12th, 2007

The advent of this development has deemed it official that we have now entered into a new debate amongst student activists.

My view on this issue has differed little from what I’ve held on to all this while – that human society cannot be left in intellectual anarchy and morally blown by the wind; grassroots, social and political institutions have to sanction society towards the higher objectives of Islam while leaving room for checks and balances.

This is nothing other than my oft-repeated concept of the Socio-Psychological Imperative.

    The Malaysian Protestant Liberal

    Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

So Mehmed Birgi and Muhammad Abdul Wahhab could pride themselves as the pioneers of Islam’s Protestant Orthodoxy.

This man, on the other had, is priding himself as the pioneer of Islam’s Protestant Liberalism. By the looks of that news article, at least.

    An effective ally?

    Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

In general, the socialist plight looks like a tantalizingly attractive ally for Muslims in the USA. Any objections?
