I have been heavily obsessed with historical studies on tajdid, if you’ve noticed recently. I’m working on an article about Said Hawwa’s tajdid. It’s partly done but I have to postpone further research on it to ensure I don’t flunk my exam and assignments in the coming days.
It’s going to be a fascinating article, insha Allah. Just be patient, I’ll publish it soon…
2 great articles on the issue of Ijtihad
Monday, October 29th, 2007I have reaped the benefits of Google Alerts countlessly. One of my alerts is set on “Nuh Keller”, and today it pointed me to a 1994 article by the indomitable statesman and ‘alim, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf republished by The American Muslim (TAM) here. It’s a nice read where he dismisses two dominant paradigms of reviving Islam – (1) improving iman, and (2), reopening the doors of ijtihad. He proposes that our source of weakness is lack of knowledge, both of the fard kifayah and fard ain, concluding his essay with the following line:
The strength of Islam is in its diversity and mosaic legacy and our weakness lies in our own ignorance of it.
It’s actually the first time I’ve visited TAM website, and my first impression is that it is no different from Q-News and Islamica. TAM, however, claims to be THE original one – which I guess is quite true given that it started off way back in 1989. I say that all three journals are similar because they present a moderate voice emphasizing, above all, tolerance between Islam and the West and between “Islams” (you know what I mean), and the usual salafi critiques.
As I browsed through the articles, I stumbled across Knut Vikor’s article on Ijtihad based on the view of 18th century Sufi and scholar, Muhammad b. Ali al-Sanusi. This man, in fact, had presented this topic at my university earlier this year – I have a recording of it if anybody is interested. Just leave your email in the comment box below.
So happy reading and don’t forget to finish up your 6 days of supererogatory Shawwal fast.
Of Maulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi
Friday, October 26th, 2007From the book Islamic Revival in British India: Deoband, 1860-1900 quoting from Tazkiratu’r-Rashid by Muhammad ‘Ashiq Ilahi Mirathi:
He was the true succesor of Shah Waliyu’llah and people came from places like Bengal, Madras, and Punjab to study from him. He would begin his teaching of hadis with Tirmizi and impress on each student the interpretation and meaning of the work in simple words. He was very patient, and often repeated his explanations. For example, he would take a simple word like ‘attarah, perfure’s wife, which I recall him defining three times for an Afghan student, each time in simpler language. He always taught after ablution and required the same of his students. If they got tired he would amuse them with jokes and anecdotes until their stomachs hurt. Then, refreshed, they would be able to go on. He would tell a story so seriously that others laughed the more. Then he would become formal again, maintaining that respect and awe necessary for a teacher. His teaching was unique in that he spoke in accordance with each student’s capacity. . . His memory was so extraordinary that he could cite the page of a relevant hadis in the sahih collections . . . His students became his lovers, but he considered himself nothing.

Another trip to the library last night. Supposedly to study, but ended up burying myself in the Islamic studies book shelves. Took out a pile of books and finally chose to check out Tariq Ramadan’s In the Footsteps of the Prophet.
Some say he’s the world’s leading Muslim intellectual. I’m about to find out…
