Blind men and the elephant

Today, DPM Najib made a politically incorrect statement in his utterance of Malaysia as an Islamic State.

MCCBCHST protests that DPM Najib is wrong in saying so because the social contract ensures the right to practise other religions. They see Najib’s statement as asking for Malaysia to shift more Islamically conservative.

On the other hand, I’m sure PAS (or at least their sympathyzers) would vehemently disagree with DPM Najib too by citing such “unIslamic” examples as prevalent immorality, widespread corruption and lax Islamic judiciary. Here PAS would view his statement as nullifying PAS’s claim of Malaysia inadequately Islamic.

I think DPM Najib is merely claiming that secularity and freedom of religoin is part of an Islamic state. Much ado about nothing?

Actually, no. Najib said exactly that Malaysia is and never was a secular state and has always been an Islamic state, which somehow affirms the traditional viewpoint that Islam and secularism are quite at odds with one another.
