Selawat…

Alhamdulillah, a very eventful and spiritually uplifting maulid. One not consisting of mechanical ritual and dry culture that I experienced back home in local suraus and schools. As “ameer” of the university’s Islamic society, I was given applause for having a historical first ever maulid on campus (of which I deserved none). Yet of course I earned the usual snide remarks from my pakistani deobandis and arab salafees.

It was a truly remarkable event. Attendance from students was expectedly low, but outsiders came in abundance, from all walks of life, young and old. The Tijanis, primarily. Also present were some Naqshbandis, Jerrahis and Shadhilis. Not to mention the lay person (that includes me). We started off with maghrib prayer, then the wazifah. Followed by the burdah of al-Busiri (very long, phew…). Then two talks, one by a philosophy professor, the other by an inner-city sufi shaykh. Closed off with Isha prayer.

A video may ensue next week, though nothing promised. Looking forward to hosting an even bigger and better one next year – if I survive till then…
